Majlis Ilmu Perdana - `Allamah Prof. Dr Yusuf Al-Qaradhawi 191209

>> Monday, December 21, 2009

Salam

Apa definisi `critical thinking'? Menurut Richard Paul : Critical Thinking is defined as `Thinking about your thinking process while you are thinking to make your thinking better!'

Tu dulu
Jumpa lagi, InsyaAlllah.

Gambar dari Malaga, Sepanyol

>> Monday, October 26, 2009

Salam

Semasa trip ke Spain, Dr. Har tak banyak berjalan utk. explore the place. Honestly, I was not quite excited to experiment Malaga - mainly because the `nostalgic' feeling that the soil under my feet, was once dipijak oleh para Mukmin yang memakmurkan Andalusia.

So, here are some photos of the streets in Malaga. Typically, South Spanish architecture - with a lot of Northen African influence.

Catatan Musafir ke bumi Andalusia, Malaga Sepanyol 300809 - 020909

>> Tuesday, September 15, 2009

Salam

1. Tiada langsung dirasai kehadiran Islam, apatah lagi suasana Ramadhan di kota Malaga. Masih panas kering dengan suhu 35-37 darjah Celcius, berpuasa di Malaga memang hampir sampai 15 jam ( Fajr 0619hrs - iftar 2047 hrs).

2. Berasa amat keseorangn apabila masih berpuasa, walaupun rakan segama khususnya dari Middle East, rata-rata mengambil ruksyah bermusafir - makan secara terbuka di dining hall, Palacio de Ferias y Congresso, di bahagian section `Special Diet requirement'. Dr. Har singgah sekejap mengambil buahan segar seperti peach dan yughort sahaja utk. hidangan beriftar, memandangkan yuran sebanyak EURO 435 yang dibayar termasuk makan tengahari.

>> Tuesday, September 1, 2009

Wanita Pertubuhan Jamaah Islah Malaysia (JIM)

28 Ogos 2009 ( 8 Ramadhan 1430H)

Isu hukuman sebat Kartika menimbulkan banyak persoalan, antaranya :

Adolescents Today:

Understanding Contemporary Teens –
`The Five Love languages of Teenagers’ book written by Gary Chapman

1. Similarities with Past Teenage Generations
—Facing Physical and Mental Changes
—Entering the Age of Reason
—Confronting Personal Morality and Values
—Thinking about Sexuality and Marriage
—Questioning the Future

2. Five Fundamental Differences with past teenage generations
•Advancement in Technology
•Knowledge of and Exposure to Violence
•The Fragmented Family
•Knowledge and Exposure to Sexuality
•Neutral Moral & Religious Values

Sexuality : What does it mean?
—A central aspect of being human throughout life that encompasses :
Sex, gender identities and roles, sexual orientation, eroticism
Pleasure, intimacy, and reproduction.
—Sexuality is experienced and expressed in :
thoughts, fantasies, desires, beliefs, attitudes, values, behaviours, practices, roles and relationships.
—While sexuality can include all of these dimensions, not all of them are always experienced or expressed.

Reproductive Health (WHO)
—A state of physical, mental, and social well-being in all matters relating to the reproductive system at all stages of life.
Implies that people are able to have :
—a satisfying and safe sex life
—the capability to reproduce
—the freedom to decide if, when, and how often to do so.

Sexual health (WHO)
—A state of physical, emotional, mental and social well-being in relation to sexuality; it is not merely the absence of disease, dysfunction or infirmity.
—Requires :
—a positive and respectful approach to sexuality and sexual relationships
—the possibility of having pleasurable and safe sexual experiences, free of coercion, discrimination and violence.

Adolescent Reproductive Health (ARH)
Health indicators :
—Age at first intercourse
—Premarital sex
—Adolescent pregnancy & childbearing
—Contraceptive use
—STI & HIV/AIDS among adolescents

For reproductive & sexual health to be attained and maintained, the reproductive & sexual rights of all persons must be respected, protected and fulfilled

Reproductive Rights - WHO
—Right to life
—Right to bodily integrity and security
—Right to privacy
—Right to the benefits of scientific progresses
—Right to seek, receive and impart information
—Right to education
—Right to health
—Right to equality in marriage and divorce
—Right for non-discriminatory treatment

Sexual Rights (WHO)
The right of all persons, free of coercion, discrimination and violence, to:
—the highest attainable standard of sexual health, including access to sexual and reproductive health care services;
—seek, receive and impart information related to sexuality;
—sexuality education;
—respect for bodily integrity;
—choose their partner;
—decide to be sexually active or not;
—consensual sexual relations;
—consensual marriage;
—decide whether or not, and when, to have children; and
—pursue a satisfying, safe and pleasurable sexual life.

The responsible exercise of human rights requires that all persons respect the rights of others.

Who are sexually healthy teens?
Sexually healthy teens are those who:
appreciate their bodies
take responsibility for their own behaviours
communicate effectively and respectfully
express love and intimacy in a way which is appropriate for their age

Malaysian Adolescents : Dilemma & Challenges Relating to their Sexuality
Sex on Campus (NST, August 18th, 2006)
Mazlin Mohamad Mokhtar, Faculty of Medicine UiTM
KAP study on Sexual & Reproductive Health among Malaysian college & university students (2005)
—727 respondents from 2 IPTA & 2 IPTS
—50% sexually active
—80% did not practise contraception
—34% thought condoms cannot help prevent HIV spread
—25% thought HIV can be transmitted through mosquito, bed bug or flea bites
—60% thought a man could tell when a woman has STD
CONCLUSION :
Physical pleasure seems to outweigh the risk of pregnancy & STDs among Malaysian university & college students
The Spectrum of Sexual Morality :

Sexual Liberationists Balanced view of Islam Traditional Moralist

Views of Traditional Moralist views
Judeo-Christian influence - Sexuality – basically wicked and negative
Sexual intercourse regarded as impure, evil, undesirable, destructive, and as if it were characteristic of the guilty, fallen and succumb to desire
Celibacy is the highest form of purity, marriage will pollute chastity and piety
Marriage is purely for procreation and binding until death intervenes. Dissolution of marriage ( divorce) : not allowed
Women : the devil advocates & associates, the gatekeeper of hell, luring men to succumb to their sexual desire

Views of Sexual Liberationists
· Freedom should be ensured for every individual, as it does not interfere with that of others;
· All inborn sexual desires and aptitudes should be freely nurtured and brought to fulfilment without any inhibition or restraint, since their curbing or frustration leads to disorders of the ego; and
· Any natural desire subsides when it is fulfilled, and it becomes insistent and excessive when it is subjected to any negative moral restraint or ill conceived prohibition.
· Emotional instability arises from discriminating among the natural instincts and desires,
· Equal nurturing and development of all human inclinations is necessary for personal and societal well being.
· To avoid constant preoccupation with sex, the only correct way is to lift all moral restraints and social prohibitions .

Balanced views on Sexuality : Islamic perspectives
· Sexuality is considered part of our identity as human beings
· (Quran, 30:21)
· And one of His signs is that He created mates for you, that you may find rest in them, and He envisaged between you love and compassion ...
· Sexual relations are confined to marriage between a wife and husband
· Sexual relations assume a prominent role in the overall well-being of the marriage, not only for childbearing
· Sex is the ultimate expression of love and is a total physical and emotional encounter.
· Al-Quran ,2:187)
· "They are your garments and you are their garments."
· Saying of the Prophet (PBUH)
· "And when the one of you makes love (has sex) it is a rewardable charity. "
· `The right for orgasm’
"If any of you has sex with his wife let he be true to her. If he attains his pleasure before
her then he shouldn't hurry her away until she also attains her pleasure." (Anas )
· Foreplay :
"Let not the one of you fall upon his wife like a beast falls. It is more appropriate to send a messenger before the act"

Sexual Morality : Responsibilities of All
lAl-Quran: An-Nuur : 30 & 31
Say to the believing men that they cast down their looks and guard their private parts; that is purer for them; surely Allah is Aware of what they do.
And say to the believing women that they cast down their looks and guard their private parts and do not display their ornaments except what appears thereof, and let them wear their head-coverings over their bosoms, and not display their ornaments except to their husbands or their fathers, or the fathers of their husbands, or their sons, or the sons of their husbands, or their brothers, or their brothers' sons, or their sisters' sons, or their women, or those whom their right hands possess, or the male servants not having need (of women), or the children who have not attained knowledge of what is hidden of women; and let them not strike their feet so that what they hide of their ornaments may be known; and turn to Allah all of you, O believers! so that you may be successful.

What does it really mean?
lAl-Quran, Al Baqarah : 223
Your wives are a tilth for you, so go into your tilth when you like, and do good beforehand for yourselves, and be careful (of your duty) to Allah, and know that you will meet Him, and give good news to the believers
lAl-Quran, An Nisaa : 34
Men are in charge of women , because Allah hath men the one of them to excel the other , and because they spend of their property ( for the support of women ) . So good women are the obedient , guarding in secret that which Allah hath guarded . As for those from whom ye fear rebellion , admonish them and banish them to beds apart , and scourge them . Then if they obey you , seek not a way against them . Lo! Allah is ever High Exalted , Great.

Sexual Ethics :
Female & male modesty - Male sense of honour concerning female members of a household
Female & male chastity, faithfulness to spouses;
Female & male inclination to cover her/his private parts, or her/his aversion to exposing any bodily nakedness in public;
Prohibition of adultery, interdiction of any visual or physical intimacy with other than one's legal spouse;
Prohibition of incest, or marriage between persons too closely related;
Avoidance of sexual intercourse with menstruating women;
Debarring pornography or obscenity;
Treating celibacy as either too saintly or undesirable

COUNSELING ADOLESCENTS ABOUT SEXUAL HEALTH Catherine Stevens-Simon, MD, and Richard L. Street, Jr., PhD
Three counselling methods
Counselling technique : 5 As
Counselling on Adolescent Reproductive Health (ARH): Developmental Approach

Counselling for teens who are sexually inactive :
• Empower them to maintain abstinence – best contraceptive method to avoid pregnancy & STI
• Provide adequate information on sexuality
• Increase self-esteem and confidence

The Solution to the sexual-related health epidemics
Postponing Sex Is The Only Solution

Postponing sexual activity until marriage with an uninfected mate is the only way for adolescents to be 100% sure of avoiding STD infection and pregnancy. Delaying sex until marriage is the most medically sound advice we can give people in today's environment.
Statement released by Medical Institute of Sexual Health

Strong Religious Views Decrease Teen’s Likelihood to Have SexTeens-particularly girls, with strong religious views are less likely to have sex than are less religious teens, largely because their religious views lead them to view the consequences of having sex negatively.
According to the recent analysis by NICHD Health Survey, religion reduces the likelihood of adolescents engaging in early sex by shaping their attitudes and beliefs about sexual activity.

RAMADHAN KAREEM !!!

And guess what, masjid tu betul-betul depan rumah Dr.Har! Seminggu ni, jiran tetangga Alam Damai, terutamanya fasa Damai Bakti berkampung kat `rumah baru' kami tu - masing2 bersemangat turun solat berjamaah. Maghrib - jemaah lelaki sampai tiga saf! Jemaah wanita & kanak-kanak lelaki- satu saf. Moga semangat ini berkekalan sampai bila-bila.

Ustaz Zul dan Dr. Har jadi AJK Kariah masjid. Alhamdulillah semua AJK setuju kita kena jadikan masjid baru kami ni -~REMAJA -FRIENDLY'. So, kenalah kami bersungguh-sungguh menjadikan aktiviti masjid menarik kepada remaja, agar hati mereka tersangkut kepada masjid!

Tu dulu, nanti kita sambung lagi, InsyaAllah.

Let's Become Sexually Healthy Muslims!

>> Friday, July 31, 2009

Salam

Baru-baru ni, pada petang Ahad 12 Julai, Dr. Har berpeluang menyampaikan a short talk on Muslim Youths & sexuality di Auditorium Utama, Akademi Pengajian Islam UM, sempena Knowledge & Arts Tour 2009 - anjuran Young Muslim Project (YMP).

Audiences - around 200 people - mostly youths aged 16 - 25. Some parents pun ada juga. Fikir punya fikir, I decided to come up with this catchy title : ` Let's Become Sexually Healthy Muslim Youths!'. Nampak ramai gak muka surprised para hadirin. However, being Dr.Har - yang dah dikenal ramai memang asyik bercakap mengenai aspek reproduksi dan kesihatan seksual ni esp remaja, tak hairanlah kan! My main intention is to put the discussion on sexuality back on its rightful respected postition in a human's life. Not as some cheap crap, mostly flavoured by pure lust and physical gratification only!

My second slide in the presentation indicated the main objective for the talk - To guide Muslim youths to be sexually healthy, so they could assist and facillitate their friends ( Muslims & non-Muslims) to be sexually healthy too! Then, I asked the crowd for a commitment : `Will you all help me achieve this simple objective?' As usual, Malaysian crowds are well-known to be lukewarm ( if not icy cold at times) - hardly anyone responded. So I said, well since you all are not quite enthusiastic with the topic, why should I continue, yah? So once again, Can you help me achieve this very important objective? Aha, lepas tu a very loud YESSSS bergema dalam auditorium tu. Barulah ada semangat nak proceed!

In summary, we should be serious to propagate Islam as a way of life that addresses all matters on human sexuality , in a very balance perspective - between traditional conservative views that look at sex as something impure, dirty and low, hence celibacy is the utmost purest way of human life and the ultra -liberal that stands for full expression of sexual desire, without any limits and boundaries.

Need to know, anyone out there wants me to elaborate on this topic? Show of hands, please. Kalau ramai yang respon, mahu Dr.Har share most of the points in the talk, I will comply in the next posting, InsyaAllah.

PS. Sorry, kena buat gini sesekali sekala. Rasa macam cakap sorang-sorang jer dalam blog ni!

Love u all : Dr.Har

Coverage on PPD modules in STAR Education Sunday 190709

>> Monday, July 20, 2009

Salam

Alhamdulillah, PPD modules Medic Fac UKM was highlighted in the STAR Education section on Sunday 19th July.

I received this sms from Prof. Dato' Dr. Lokman Saim, Dean of Medic Fac & Pengarah for PPUKM at 12.00 noon yesterday :

`A full page writeup in STAR education today about UKM Medical Curriculum regarding PPD. mentioned Nabishah and Harlina at interview but didn't come out in article.'

Terharu baca sms tu, merasakan betapalah baiknya dan ikhlasnya hati boss Dr.Har ni. Tentunya dia bimbang, kami berdua ( Prof. Nabishah is my Head of Dept Medical Education) terasa hati bila baca laporan dua muka penuh tu dan tak jumpa nama kami. InsyaAllah, Dr.Har ni tak mudah terasa hati dalam bab-bab macam ni, so terus membalas sms tadi :

` Tak pe boss, we 'r one team. We share all the ups and downs together. Jazakallah 4 the support. may Allah terima semua amal kerdil kita ni. Cc to K.Nabishah.'

So, sapa yang terlepas coverage tu, here it is :

Doctors in the making
By KAREN CHAPMAN

THE ultimate goal of medical education is to produce competent and ethical doctors. Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia has gone a step further by including personal and professional development as part of its medical degree.
FROM gynaecology to cardiology, medicine is a career with many choices.
But there’s more to being a doctor than diagnosing patients and treating their illnesses.

A doctor’s personal and professional development is just as important.
Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM) medical faculty dean and UKM medical centre director Prof Datuk Dr Lokman Saim said the ultimate goal of medical education is to produce competent, safe and ethical doctors.

»There’s more to being a doctor than diagnosing patients and treating their illnesses as a doctor’s personal and professional development is just as important«PROF LOKMAN

“The recent trend among medical schools is to put emphasis on students’ personal and professional development, and for this to be assessed.

“Traditionally, students who began their clinical training in their third year often acquired their ‘professionalism’ by observing their seniors and specialists who trained and imparted not only their knowledge, but values to them. However, there was no way of knowing if the students actually picked and practised their good habits,’’ he said.

In traditional medical education, students had lectures in areas such as anatomy, pharmacology and biochemistry and spent time in laboratories in the first three years.

In their third year (of the medical degree), they would be sent for their clinical postings to hospitals where they would obtain further training in diagnosing patients.

“This has been the tradition and it is during clinical postings that students are supervised by doctors. Apart from getting hands-on training, the students can also gauge and observe the manner in which their superiors conduct themselves before patients.

“This is also the time when they (students) too build their own character in terms of bedside manners and ethics, and in doing so, acquire a level of professionalism for themselves.”

Prof Lokman however pointed out that “professionalism’ in itself, could not be taught.

Communicating with patients like how to convey bad news, and whether to tell family members of a patient’s illness, were in the past learnt through apprenticeship or clinical postings.

“But in the actual practice of medicine, besides the knowledge and clinical skills, professionalism is very important as it makes a doctor ethical, courteous and able to communicate well with patients.

“All this while, these factors were not formalised in the curriculum, but the recent trend in medical education is to include issues of personal and professional development as part of the curriculum,” he added.

In short, they have to be included in the medical curriculum to ensure that future doctors would turn out to be both compassionate and knowledgeable professionals.

Doctors-to-be

The subject is called Personal and Professional Development (PPD) and is a part of UKM’s new five-year medical curriculum for students.
“PPD is emphasised in our new university curriculum as we have changed from the traditional curriculum to one which is more integrated and this is one of the subjects.

“University officials visited medical schools in Australia and the United Kingdom before reviewing the curriculum but the PPD and student camps are our own innovation,” he added.

Prof Lokman said this subject is taught throughout the five years of the medical degree, and is not limited to just one or two lectures on ethics or how to be a good doctor.

“We decided to add PPD in response to the demands of the society where we see many complaints regarding doctors, mainly due to ethical issues, doctors not being professional and most important is a problem with communication as some doctors don’t communicate.

“Very few problem cases are on inadequate skills or knowledge. Patients sue doctors because they don’t know how to communicate with them, not just in Malaysia but throughout the world,” he said.

The most common problem with some doctors is that they “see” patients but they do not say anything or look at them and just dispense the medicine, he added.
Since personality and professionalism are issues, it was decided that the medical curriculum at UKM should include them.

This is also the trend of medical education throughout the world, where personal and professional development are taught and assessed.

“If they have not passed the subject, they cannot graduate as doctors,” he said.

How PPD is taught

It is not just about lectures and notes for PPD but a mixture of learning styles.
There are several general concept lectures on ethics and professionalism but a person cannot change just by attending them, he added.

“The other method is to have small group discussions where they discuss real or simulated cases which involve ethical or personality issues.

“About 10 to 12 students will discuss the issue and come up with an opinion — again developing personality cannot be done in a big group,” he said, adding that the discussions are supervised by facilitators who are specialists.

Another method of teaching is to face simulated patient scenarios — where they are put in situations that would test their skills in dealing with a difficult patient, having to break bad news or how to explain procedures and obtaining consent for them from patients.

“This wasn’t taught previously, so some doctors could have explained the wrong thing or used very medical terms.

“We teach them how it should be done using layman terms,” he said.

Prof Lokman highlighted that camps to further emphasise students’ personal and professional development, are held three times during the five-year medical degree — in their first, third and fifth years of study. “Usually when students go camping, it is for leisure but this camp is part of the medical curriculum.

“They are gathered in a camp for four days with about 20 lecturers,” he said, adding that most activities are carried out in small groups of 10.

According to Prof Lokman, the objectives of these camps are to inculcate the spirit of working together as a team and leadership qualities.

The camps for first-year students are like a transition period as they prepare students to move from a school environment to one that houses doctors-in-the-making.
Besides seminars, there are also small group discussions on the importance of practising good values as well as the esssence and meaning of humanity, sincerity, kindness and love. At the first-year student camps, students also identify the attributes of good and bad doctors.

Fourth-year medical student Mohd Fadhli Mohd Fauzi said the camp is a good introduction to what life as a medical student is about.

“We learn about the different learning styles and time management too,” he said.
Mohd Fadhli who is also president of the medical student association, said the role plays during the camps are useful as they help with picking up skills.

“We are given a scenario and students will either act as patients and doctors so we can better understand what our patients go through,” he said.

Prof Lokman said selected movies which have legal and medico issues are also shown and students will then discuss them.

As an example, in the camp for first year students, the movie Patch Adams is shown — it is the story of Hunter “Patch” Adams (as portrayed by Robin Williams), a medical doctor who became famous for his unconventional approach to medicine.

But it is not all serious discussions as there is time for games and jungle trekking too.

Recalling one fun game, Mohd Fadhli said it was a telematch where groups of students had to dress in surgical scrubs and carry out activities — whoever was the fastest won the game.

“It was fun as we had to really work together till the end,” he added.
Another activity which Mohd Fadhli liked during the third year PPD camp was the white coat ceremony — when the facilitators gave them their white coats.

“It is a symbolic gesture as the third year is the first time we go to the hospital wards for our clinical postings,” he said.

Prof Lokman said other activities for the third-year student camps include the students demonstrating their abilities to work in a team and having sketches and role play.

“There are also small group discussions on confidentiality and the doctor-patient relationship,” he said.

At the third-year PPD camp, he said students discuss skills on keeping proper documentation for medico-legal records, death certificates, disease notification, sexual violence and child abuse.

There are also discussions on identifying misconduct and negligence in current medical practice.

“As an example, the students learn about medical certificates and the importance of not issuing them unethically,” said Prof Lokman.

Fifth-year medical student Farin Masra who has attended all three camps, feels they have helped her become a more holistic doctor in the making.

“The fifth-year student camp has also prepared me to become a houseman as I finish in eight months’ time,” she added.

Farin said the camps have also been useful as the facilitators themselves have shared what it is like to be practising doctors and the importance of balancing relationships with both patients and family.

Prof Lokman said feedback from students is that they enjoy the camps as it is a different environment from the university.

“These activities are all assessed. Facilitators give marks on students’ performance and participation.

“There are also mini tests and these marks are added up as a continuous assessment of how students are doing,” he added.

KL - Baling - Kota Bharu and finally Bukit Keluang, Kuala Besut!

>> Tuesday, June 16, 2009

Salam

Kami sekeluarga bercadang nak gi holiday cum working trip for Dr.Har di Kuala Besut, serentak dgn Kem PPD 3 ( 31 Mei - 5 Jun).

Baling.

So, plan bertukar - kami bertolak ke Baling tepat jam 9.00 malam tu, untuk menjengah Pak - yang Alhamdulillah dah boleh discharged dari observation di A&E Hosp Baling. However, urusan keluarga TOP priority, plan bercuti can wait!

Sampai di Baling, jam 2.30 am. Alhamdulillah, terasa sangat Allah bersama perjalanan kami. Anak-anak Syifa', Syamil dan Deena - tidur all the way.

Menitis air mata Pak melihat kami sekeluarga datang menghampirinya di tilam di bilik rumah atas, awal dinihari tu. Sambil menepuk-nepuk bahu anak lelaki kesayangannya, dia menggelengkan kepala - ` Awang, awang... kelek jugak malam-malam ni.' Emak hanya memerhatikan, namun kami terasa betapa mereka amat menghargai kedatangan kami.

Sebelum masuk tidur, Ustaz sempat menyuluh bawah pokok durian di halaman rumah, rupa-rupanya ada gugur sebutir durian! Tersenyum melerek dia masuk ke rumah membimbit durian sebesar kepala, Emak menyapa, ` Awang, memanglah pokok tu tunggu mu kelek. Dah seminggu tak gugur, malam ni jugak dia nak gugur!

Pak setuju, puas nampaknya dia melihat kami, walaupun hanya sekejap saja.

Nice chalets - we were zonked! Anak-anak kat chalet no. 104, Ummi dan Ayah di chalet 103. Gi jengok students, baru sampai around jam 9.30 malam! 14 hours of trip - how tiring. Program taklimat malam tunda ke esok pagi.

Returned to resort yang terletak tak sampai 1 km from the camp around 11pm. Semua dah selamat dibuai mimpi...........Alahmdulillah, semua dah selamat sampai. Kem PPD 3 , here we come.

Presidentship of MAMANEH

Salam

Yeah, yeah, yeah - I have not been updating this blog for almost two weeks now. No excuses, I must be more disciplined in accomplishing this very important responsibility - eversince I have decided that I should own a blog.

Okay, let me go chronologically - since the last update.

On 30th May, despites the many invitations for weddings ( it's school holiday!) I managed to squeeze some time to attend MAMANEH ( Malaysian Assoc. of Maternal & Neonatal Health) AGM in UKMMC. It was election year, and guess what, I was elected to be the President for 2009 - 2011.

Basically, MAMANEH has many objectives - among others are to upgrade knowledge on maternal and neonatal ( newborn within the first one month of life) health and to create public awareness on issues related to maternal and neonatal health.

We are yet to sit for our first EXCO meeting on July 2nd, InsyaAllah. I intend to go strong on issues related to unwanted pregnancies that resulted in infanticide and abandonment of newborns. Please pray that I will be able to lead MAMANEH to achieve its noble objectives.

Mirena Academy Indonesia 2009 - 100509

>> Thursday, May 14, 2009

Salam

This is the second session on Mirena ( LNG-IUS : an intrauterine system for contraception) that I am involved in within two weeks. After the 5th Asia-Pacific Mirena Academy in Kuala Lumpur on 300409, I was speaking to about 100 Indonesian O&G specialists in Yogjakarta - topic of my talk : Counselling for Mirena Users - General & Islamic perspectives.

The main concern for the doctors is dealing with the irregular pervaginal bleeding that might be experienced by the Mirena users - as regards to whether it is haidh or istihadhah.

I am grateful to Allah SWT who has opened the door for me to step out of Malaysia and share my experience with others.

InsyaAllah, on 5-7th June, will be in Beijing for the second Asia-Pacific Mirena FORUM pulak, as a speaker cum trainer. Will keep you all updated on this trip, InsyaAllah.

Yogjakarta Trip 08-100509

Salam

I feel very much at home.

Hospitaliti staf BSP, memang amat baik sekali. Hari Sabtu 090509 - kebetulan juga Hari Wesak, kami putar2 di bandar Yogja sahaja, memandangkan Candi Borobudur di tutup utk. memberi laluan upacara khusus sambutan Wesak. So, Dr.Har sempat melawat Kraton - Palace of Sultan Haemangkubuwono yang diasaskan dari tahun 1756. Now, Sultan Haemangkubuwono ke-X : menjadi pemimpin Yogja dan terbabit sama dalam PEMILU baru-baru ni.

InsyaAllah akan tulis lagi..........

KENYATAAN MEDIA Wanita JIM: Perutusan Hari Ibu 2009

>> Saturday, May 9, 2009

Terima Kasih

KENYATAAN MEDIA Wanita Pertubuhan Jamaah Islah Malaysia (JIM)
Sempena Sambutan Hari Ibu 2009
8 Mei 2009

Prof. Madya Dr. Harlina Halizah Siraj
Ketua Wanita JIM Pusat 2007-2009

Hadiah Hari Ibu buat Bonda Hjh Siti Ramlah

>> Thursday, May 7, 2009

Salam

Alhamdulillah, another day dawning - Allah has given me a new day to work on, another step closer to Him, InsyaAllah.

Apa Yang Aku Pelajari Dari Madrasah Hajah Siti Ramlah Anuar

Siapakah Hajah Siti Ramlah Haji Anuar ?

Mbok memang isteri solehah, syurga Allah tempat ganjarannya.’ ................

Salam

Dr.Har tengah baca satu buku karangan Linda & Richard Eyre : Lifebalance - How to Simplify and Bring Harmony to Your Everyday Life.

Menurut penulisnya, Balance ada tiga :
1. Priority balance - balancing between work & family
2. Goal balance - between achievements & relationships
3. Attitude balance - between structure & spontaneity.

I am really engrossed with the third balance - which I seriously trying to understand. It is the balance between being firm, rigid and structured with being flexible & spontaneous. Then I found the word SERENDIPITY - which is defeined in this book as : finds something GOOD while looking for something else.

Actually, if things do not work out as planned, don't get upset! Before you start throwing your tantrum around - PAUSE......look around, and grab the chance to do something else! InsyaAllah, there is nothing wasteful about life. You just have to learn to be more aware of the serendipity surrounding you!

So, now - each morning , during my Subuh prayer - I will pray hard : Oh Allah, grant me the strength to discover the beauty in EVERYTHING You have in store for me!

AMEEEENNNNNNN..........

A busy & exciting week! Part (2)

Salam

Last Thursday, 30th April, Dr.Har diminta oleh a pharmaceutical company, Bayer Schering Pharma to chair their 5th Asia Pacific MIRENA Academy at Hotel Crowne Plaza KL.

My first experience in chairing an international meeting - Alhamdulillah, segala pengalaman menjadi Ketua Wanita JIM dan mempengerusikan banyak mesyuarat setakat ini dimanfaatkan sepenuhnya dari mula sampai akhir.

Around 100 participants attended - besides Malaysian doctors, ada participants from The Phillipines, Pakistan, Thailand, Indonesia and Singapore. I was so honoured to have my dearest best friend Sister Dr. Hafidzah Mustakim ( K.Peed) - Ketua Wanita JIM Kelantan was also among the participants. Key speakers - Prof. Sven Olaf Skouby from Copenhagen Denmark & Dr. Andrew Zuschmann from Sydney Aust.

Most challenging was during the Q&A sessions. Almaklum, begitu ramai nak bertanya - belum lagi yang nak bagi berjela-jela komen on the topics, memandangkan yang datang ni bukan calang-calang orang kat tempat asal depa.

So, I decided to use my mandate as the chair - mungkin boleh jadi tips untuk sesiapa yang kena mempengerusikan majlis atau mesyuarat yang dijangkakan hangat.

First I gave out the outline of the sessions - all are encouraged to come forward to the microphone to ask the speakers. There is no such thing as stupid questions - the only stupid question is the one left unanswered when there is ample opportunities to ask and clarify.

Then show of hands - since ada nine hands coming up - I divided the session into two parts - part one for the first five participants then the rest. I asked them all to come line up at the mic - and to remind the one in front who got carried away with their comments & questions, by gently tapping the shoulder so the person will be reminded that there are some more people waiting for their turns. Kumpulkan soalan, then the speakers jawab secara ringkas. Alhamdulillah, by doing so, all questions were asked and answered. And everyone was happy!

During break and lunch, a few participants came up and commented - I like the way you chair - the meeting become very efficient and punctual. Alhamdulillah! At the end of the session, the Regional Product Manager, Marc Wittehuer & Crosby the PR manager jumpa Dr.Har and hoped that I could chair again for them next time around!

Lesson learnt : Grab whatever opportunities to explore new area - challenge your comfort zone!

A very busy & exciting week ! ( Part 1): ICE-BREAKING

Salam

Alhamdulillah, here I am again. Pheww........after the last posting on April 27th, I was practically kept very occupied by my teaching activities.

On 28 & 29 April - ada Bengkel Latihan Fasilitator Kem PPD 3 di PPUKM. Lecturers (Professors, Assoc. Profs & lecturers) Medic Fac UKM ni kena dilatih utk. jadi fasilitator outdoor kem modul Perkembangan Kendiri dan Profesionalisme (PPD) ke3 yang diadakan utk. pelajar Tahun 5 (akhir). This year - Kem PPD 3 akan diadakan di Kuala Besut T'ganu pada 1 - 5 Jun 2009 ( kebetulan B'day Dr.Har - June 1st, and anniversary sharing my life with my dearest Ustz Zul on June 2nd pulak tu!)

In this training session - I have to teach them ( the lecturers) how to ice-break the newly formed student groups of 12 persons per group.

As usual, I have to ice-break the lecturers first! Bukan senang, walaupun dah bertahun-tahun kenal sebab kerja tempat sama, not necessarily the ice has been broken! Would like to share some tips how to facilitate an ice-breaking session:

Intonasi suara, air muka, twinkling of the eyes and of course, body language lain kena sincerely show your enthuasism. Kalau hati sebenarnya tak `gumbira', group members memang boleh perasan.

2. Introduce yourself FIRST! Be VERY SINCERE - tell the group what you want them to know about yourself - be honest and never lie!

3. Spend the next two- three minutes to explain the word & meaning of ice-breaking . Rupa2nya, depa ambil nama tu dari `Ice-breakers' - kapal besar yang digunakan utk. langgar ice blocks kat North as well as South Poles - during exploration & expeditions.

ICE ni - sejuk & cold , perlukan suhu sekitaran ditingkatkan utk. MENCAIRKANnya. Oleh itu everyone must try to increase the WARMTH by smiling, start engaging in conversation, getting interested etc. so dgn itu ICE tadi akan mencair perlahan-lahan. Namun jangan sampai suhu terlalu tinggi hingga sampai ke boiling point pulak, nanti mendidih dan menggelegak lah pulak!

Jangan lupa ingatkan semua utk. maintain the WARMTH, sebab kalau tidak dikekalkan suhu yang hangat tu, apatah lagi kalau dropping balik semula, ICE tadi akan RE-FORMED! Cantik sungguh analogi ICE-BREAKING ni sebenarnya!

4. Then go around the group.

5. At least empat aktiviti mudah, InsyaAllah if you have about 30-45 minit - moga2 group tu akan mantap hubungan silaturrahim sesama mereka.

Dipendekkan cerita, Alhamdulillah the sessions were successful. I managed to keep most of them to stay on dari pagi sampai pukul 5pm to go through the training session. NOW, that was indeed an achievement, commented one of my junior lecturers - memandangkan kita faham benar perangai senior staff ni, esp kalau training session buat di PPUKM sendiri. Sat-sat pager bunyilah, handphone pulak tu, tahu-tahu - minta excuse sebab OT ( operation theatre) @ clinic @ ward panggil!

Apapun, Dr.Har berdoa agar KEM PPD 3 will be successful! InsyaAllah, lepas ni kita jumpa dalam Part (2 ) & Part (3) pulak yer!

Love you all : Dr.Har

Promosi Buku Citra Wanita Kontemporari - PWTC 250409

>> Monday, April 27, 2009

Alhamdulillah, Allah SWT memberikan keizinan-Nya, memberikanku peluang berupa modal yang lima - keHIDUPan, keLAPANGan,KeMUDAan ( 43 years is still MUDA & BERTENAGA!),keSIHATan dan keKAYAan - Alhamdulillah sekali lagi.
